The script for the Passion of our Lord was written a thousand years and more earlier. Jesus' betrayal in particular, the subject of today's Gospel, is seen as the carrying out of what was written prior. Specifically, the 41st Psalm contains the script, and though can at first be seen as a reference to Ahithophel who betrayed David, ultimately this is fullfilled in Judas' betrayal.
